John Kosovich Wines was established in 1922 and operated as Westfield Wines until 2003 when the decision was made to change the name to honour John Kosovich’s 50th vintage. It is the 3rd oldest winery operating in the Swan Valley, situated approximately half an hour north of Perth.
In 1995 John Kosovich was awarded the Order of Australia medal for his contribution to the wine industry.
In 2004 he won the prestigious Jack Mann Medal for services to the Western Australian wine industry and in that same year the winery was awarded the Best West Australian Small Producer at the Perth Royal Wine
The broad axe used by Johns father Lilo to cut the 7 metre beam spanning the underground cellar hangs from that beam today. The cellar, one of only two original underground cellars in the Swan Valley today, was dug by hand in 1922.
Swan Valley
The original Swan Valley vineyard was first planted in 1922 and now mainly produces Chardonnay, Verdelho, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin and our fortified styles. Here the vineyard enjoys a warm, even climate and soils of sand over rich loam, which produces grapes with full fruit ripeness. All the fruit is harvested by hand.
Manjimup
The need for expansion in the 1980’s led to the purchase of our Manjimup property in the cool South West corner of the state. With its soils of gravely loam and substantially cooler climate, we employ viticultural techniques that ensure low yields from our vines. Coupled with a slow ripening season this then produces intense fruit concentration in the grapes. There are 15 acres under vines producing Chardonnay, Verdelho, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir.
